The APO exam has two stages:
- Preliminary Exam
- Main Exam
Preliminary Exam
The Preliminary Exam has two papers:
- Paper 1: General Studies
- Marks: 100
- Time: 2 hours
- Covers Current Affairs, Indian History, Geography, Economy, Polity, and General Science. Some questions about Jharkhand may also be included.
- Paper 2: Law
- Marks: 200
- Time: 2 hours
- Covers the Evidence Act, Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC), Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Constitution. This will be an objective paper (multiple-choice questions).
Main Exam
The Main Exam includes a written test and an interview.
- Language Paper: Before taking the Main Exam, you must clear a qualifying Language Paper worth 100 marks. You choose one of nine regional languages spoken in Jharkhand. Passing this paper is mandatory, but its marks won’t count towards your Main Exam total.
- Written Exam: The written test has eight papers:
- General Hindi: 100 marks, 3 hours
- English: 100 marks, 3 hours

- Criminal Procedure Code & Evidence Act
- Indian Penal Code (IPC)
- Indian Constitution
- Criminal Minor Acts
- Interview: Candidates who clear the written exam will be called for an interview.
